Venerdì 27 gennaio, il presidente Donald Trump ha firmato un ordine esecutivo che, tra le altre disposizioni, sospende l'ammissione dei rifugiati siriani e limita il flusso di altri rifugiati e immigrati da alcuni paesi negli Stati Uniti.
Permane ancora l'incertezza sull'impatto e sul futuro dell'ordine e diversi organi di governo nel mondo dello sport - descritti di seguito - hanno rilasciato dichiarazioni in risposta.
Secondo l'ordine, a persone provenienti da sette paesi è vietato entrare negli Stati Uniti per i prossimi 90 giorni e il programma di ammissione dei rifugiati negli Stati Uniti è sospeso per 120 giorni. I paesi maggiormente colpiti sono Iran, Iraq, Siria, Sudan, Libia, Yemen e Somalia.Sabato, un giudice federale di Brooklyn ha emesso una sospensione che blocca temporaneamente una parte dell'ordine.
In risposta a questo ordine esecutivo, l'Iran ha promesso di adottare misure reciproche che includono il divieto temporaneo agli americani di ottenere i visti per entrare nel loro paese. Il ministro degli Esteri iraniano Javad Zarif ha detto che tutti gli americani che attualmente possiedono un visto iraniano valido lo faranno onorare.
Lunedì, USA Weightlifting ha pubblicato una dichiarazione ufficiale sul proprio sito web citando il CEO Phil Andrews. La sua citazione appare di seguito, in parte facendo riferimento ai Campionati mondiali di sollevamento pesi 2017 programmati in California entro la fine dell'anno:

Inoltre, il Comitato Olimpico degli Stati Uniti ha rilasciato una dichiarazione del presidente Larry Probst e del CEO dell'USOC Scott Blackmun. Dal corpo del messaggio:
"Ci è stato specificamente chiesto quale impatto potrebbe avere l'ordine esecutivo su atleti e funzionari che vengono negli Stati Uniti per competere. Riconoscendo lo straordinario potere dello sport internazionale di riunire le persone in una pacifica celebrazione di amicizia, eccellenza e rispetto, l'U.S. il governo oggi ci ha informato che lavorerà con noi per garantire che atleti e funzionari di tutti i paesi abbiano accelerato l'accesso agli Stati Uniti per partecipare alle competizioni atletiche internazionali."
Nel mondo degli sport di forza, in particolare nel sollevamento pesi olimpico, ci sono almeno due eventi internazionali che si svolgeranno il prossimo anno in cui l'ordine esecutivo potrebbe avere un impatto sui concorrenti. A marzo, l'Iran ospiterà la 2a International Fajr Cup, un Gran Premio della Federazione internazionale di sollevamento pesi (IWF) in cui è possibile stabilire record mondiali.
A novembre, ad Anaheim, in California, si terranno i Campionati mondiali di sollevamento pesi 2017.
Mentre manca ancora un mese alla Fajr Cup di marzo e i Campionati mondiali sono verso la fine dell'anno solare, non è ancora chiaro quale impatto - se del caso - l'ordine esecutivo del presidente Trump potrebbe avere sulla competizione sportiva di forza sia negli Stati Uniti che all'estero.
In una mossa da un altro organo di governo degli Stati Uniti di un altro sport olimpico, USA Wrestling ha annunciato all'inizio di questa settimana che hanno ancora in programma di inviare una squadra in Iran in due settimane per competere in un torneo di wrestling freestyle.
